I think that it appealed to those of a patriotic nature. To a person very passionate for their country.
But then again…it had the battles for the majority of action-loving people.
For the romantic: a tear-jerking love story….

One that I really enjoyed was "The Kingdom of Heaven." It takes place during The Crusades — the centuries long battle between the Muslims and Christians for control of Jerusalem. Orlando Bloom stars. Costars include Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, and Brendan Gleeson (also in Braveheart). Besides being a great story, it is also beautiful to watch. Ridley Scott makes gorgeous movies. He also, by the way, directed Gladiator. If you liked that, you’ll also enjoy this one. The styles are very similar.

Kurt above mentions Edward II he went in a bad way. They stuck a tube of animal horn in his rectum and then put a red hot poker through the tube. The idea being no visible signs.It obviously killed him and his screams could be heard a long way off. Not a nice way to go.
