"It’s our wits that make us men."
what does this mean?^ it is used when young william wants to fight, but his uncle says that he will have to learn to use his head before he can wield a sword. I really really need this question answered!! what does this mean?!

Anyone can fight in a brawl. The man who will survive is the one who is capable of using his brains to overcome his opponent. Anyone can be beaten if you can anticipate their moves or strategies and stay ahead of them or successfully distract them. Our "wits" are our best friends when we find ourselves in a treacherous situation.

i haven’t seen the movie yet but i can guess based on the context.

a sword, representing violence is ,considered in the movie the lowest form of solving a problem. it is what animals and people without a reasoning mind do. it takes true wits to solve a problem, which is the characteristic that defines us as men.

another interpretation can be that, once one gets into a fight, without wits, he will either lose his head to anger or simply lose to another fighter who is smarter.
